Book Review: Lola and the Boy Next Door

Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Title: Lola and the Boy Next Door
Author: Stephanie Perkins
Genre/s: Young Adult, Contemporary Romance

Synopsis:

Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion . . . she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit—more sparkly, more fun, more wild—the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.

When Cricket—a gifted inventor—steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.

My Thoughts:

Okay, so I made the mistake of reading this first before Anna and the French Kiss but because I don't like reviewing the sequel before the first book, I decided to wait until I read and review Anna and the French Kiss before doing this review.

So from the very beginning of the story, I have a bit of an issue with Lola. I really don't understand the way she reacted when the Bell twins came back to their neighborhood. I think, it's too shallow for her to held a grudge over Cricket and Calliope for not inviting her to their party. And the fact that it happened 2 years ago and she still can't moved on with it, makes it even more immature to me.

And Cricket, well I'm going to ready my force field now for the oncoming assault of his admirers because even though he's kind, caring, smart and sweet, I can't seem to see his swoon-worthy side. I really tried, but I can't see what's so special about him. Maybe, I'm just immune to his sexy geek appeal or something. Anyway, I pity him because he fell in love with an immature girl like Lola.

The only thing that I like about this book is Anna and Entienne and of course, Lindsey. I instantly love Entienne and Anna from the moment I first read about them. And after I read their love story I fell in love with them even more. And Lindsey, well, she's a really cute and funny character. I really like her.

Overall, I didn't like this book as much as I would have want to. I still love Stephanie Perkins, though and I would still love to read her next book Isla and the Happily Ever After.
